The Alpha’s Top Tips
- Double: North Melbourne win ($1.25), into GWS win ($1.65) @ $2.06
- North Queensland win @ $1.83
If you’re only going to watch one game of AFL this weekend – or even this year – make it the Showdown on Sunday afternoon. Clashes between Port Adelaide and Adelaide are always memorable, but the death of Phil Walsh will make this the most emotionally charged version of the derby’s history. There won’t be a player on the field who wasn’t affected by his death, due to the fact it was Port that he departed from prior to taking the Crows job this year. And given the huge amount of respect that both these clubs, along with the AFL community, had for the man, the Best and Fairest for this weekends game will be awarded the Phil Walsh Medal. Expect Patty Dangerfield to be the front runner for that. The Crows midfielder is known for his effort and tenacity and it should be at it’s absolute peak in honour of his late coach.
The best bet for the weekend is a double on the Roos and Giants. North Melbourne bounced back well last week putting the sword to a Geelong outfit who won’t make the top 8. They meet a Bomber’s side tonight who were lucky to win against the Demons last week. The Roos have them measured in every position, and given North’s ladder situation, they won’t be taking this lightly.
Roll that money into the Giants when they face the Gold Cost at Metricon tomorrow. I thought they’d struggle to win a game without Mumford, Patfull and Davis but their defence was more than sound in their dominant win against the Saints last week. Shaw was brilliant and if their younger defenders can maintain some consistency then they have the fire power through midfield and up front to hand the club it’ first ever finals birth. They have more fire power than the Suns, and also a lot more to play for. The Giants should win.
Monday night always seems to be the best night for a bet. We’ll be waiting all week for it again here when the Cowboys travel to the Beaches to take on a Manly outfit who showed vast improvement last week. The Cowboys look well over the odds here. Granted, the game is at Brookevale and the Sea Eagles are off the bottom of the ladder with what appears to be a more “settled” squad of players. However, we’re being offered $1.83 for a side sitting second on the ladder with possibly the most in form halves in the competition. The reason being? The Cowboys don’t win at Brookevale. That will change this weekend though. The Cow’s will get up by a Thurston field goal.
