The Alphas Top Tips
- Double: West Coast win @ $1.70 into Adelaide win @ $1.31
- Bulldogs vs Dragons total points under 38.5 @ $1.90
The final week before the bye rounds has thrown up two pivotal clashes: Essendon vs Geelong at Etihad on Saturday night, and North Melbourne vs West Coast in Hobart on the Sunday.
The former game will feature two clubs whose season is hanging in the balance. The Bombers have been falling short in recent weeks. Out of their last 5 games they’ve only posted wins against St Kilda (what a great escape that was) and the Lions. They sit 10th, only 4 points outside the eight, but come up against West Coast and Hawthorn in the weeks following this clash against Geelong. The Cats are also staring down the barrel sitting in 12th position on equal points with Essendon. This one shapes up as a June final and could shape the rest of the season for both clubs. Watson and Fletcher will be key absentees for the Bombers, but given the former’s form these past few rounds, it may not be the worst thing. Likewise, Cats veteran in Selwood needs to improve if his side are to lift themselves out of an unusual slump. This should go down to the wire, but we’re going the Bombers purely because they’re better value in a true 50/50 game.
We might not have touched this game, but William Hill are offering a bonus bet back up to $100 if your team loses by less than 24. That’s enough to entice us for this close encounter. – Click here to find out more.
West Coast have got to be the bet of the round. They punished the Cats last week and should have won by more than 56 points given their scoring shots. Big Nic Naitanui is returning to his best, and laying the platforms for one of the most efficient midfields in the competition right now. If North’s don’t take lessons from Geelong’s poor handling of Kennedy last week, this will be very one sided indeed. The Eagles are well overs at $1.70. Get on!
For a bit of value, roll the Eagles into the Crows against Carlton on Saturday. The Blues had improved against the Swans and do welcome back Murphy and Judd, however, a close encounter will be as good as they’ll be hoping for. The class difference will tell in the end, and Adelaide should win comfortably.

Game of the week has to be Dogs vs Dragons, and they might just draw a big crowd too, given the long weekend. The Dragons are a serious outfit this year. They’ve fixed up their defence, and showed us last week that scoring points isn’t a problem either. The Dogs will be bringing a near full strength side though. In the week before Origin, Reynolds and Mbaye showed us they mean business, and the performance of the latter this season might just mean Hodkinson moves on at the end of the year. It makes sense, why waste room in the salary cap on an Origin half-back when you’ve bred your own 21 year old star who will flourish for years to come. Still, for this game they welcome Hodkinson back which pushes Mbaye into the centres. Add to that one of the most dangerous forward packs in the country, with the likes of Klemmer and Kasiano coming off the bench, and you have one legit title contender. This is a big test for the Dragons. If they win this they make a massive statement regarding their own title aspirations. The Dogs look to have an edge on paper, but the Dragons have been the competition’s most disciplined team for weeks. I can’t guarentee a winner, but I can suggest that points may be very hard to come by given the defence of both. Best bet is total points under 38.5.
